Speaking Part 1 extracts
Part 1 General Questions
The questions in Part 1 are very general, typically about things like routines and free time activities.
How to do it
Even in Part 1 it is important for candidates to think about the details in their answers.
If you can give more information in an answer it will help to prepare you to give much longer answers in the other parts of the speaking test.
Speaking Part 2 extracts
Part 2 Individual Long Turn using two photographs
The exercise in Part 2 is to compare two photographs and answer a question. There is also a second question for each candidate to answer.
Speaking Part 3 extracts
Part 3 Collaborative Task
Part 3 has a topic question and some options to discuss together. In the second part of the task you are asked to make choice of one or more of these options.
How to do it
Listen and respond to your partner
Part of the exam score is how you respond to your partner. In Part 3 in particular you need to listen to your partner and respond to their ideas.

Where are you from?
- I am from a small town in the north of Italy.
- I live in the capital city of Japan, Tokyo.
- I live in the countryside, not far from Guadalajara in Mexico.
Where do you read news on the Internet?
On my phone I have a news app which shows many websites so I look at this. I don’t like social media for news because I prefer to find the news for myself. I also have the app for the BBC and I look at this sometimes to help me practise my English.
Speaking Part 4 Sample answers
Is it better to live at home or away from home when you are a student?
A: I think it depends where you are studying at university and many students like to stay with their family because it is cheap and maybe for them it’s relaxing. If you move away from your parents they will not be able to help you so much.
B: Yes, I agree that it is a good thing to live at home but sometimes people want to live in a different city. I think one reason for this is to study specific subjects or maybe another university is much better. It is expensive but normally the government will give money to students to help them.
